Police in this southwestern Franklin County community were warning parents Monday night about a possible abduction attempt.

A girl walking home on High Street at 4:15 p.m. told police a late-model Chevy Blazer pulled up beside her, then cut her off when she began to walk faster.

A nearby resident ran out of his house and chased off the driver, police said.

The girl told investigators the sport utility vehicle was blue or purple in color. She described the driver as a white male between the ages of 30 and 40 years old.

Village police said they would step up patrols around school hours as a result of the report. Chief Bryan Wilkinson indicated the incident should serve as a reminder for parents to talk about the reality of stranger danger.

Tips from police included leaving porch lights on for early morning safety as kids go to the bus stop, reminding them to yell, scream and run to a safe place if they sense danger, and immediately report anything suspicious to an adult.
