Columbus Working On Regulations For Pedicab Industry

Columbus City Council is working on regulations for the growing pedicab industry. Find out why.

Columbus City Council is working on legislation to regulate the growing pedicab industry in the capital city.

"The number one goal with the legislation is the safety of our citizens," council member Michelle Mills said.

Mills said pedicab business owners approached city council with the idea. There are no rules regulating the industry.

Julian Valencia, with Columbus Pedicabs, says out of town pedicab drivers flood the market when concerts and Ohio State University football games are happening.

"They were like going down the wrong way on Olentangy River Road with no lights at night and I'm like, I was almost having a heart attack," Valencia said.

City council is looking at rules that would require pedicabs to have reflectors and turn signals.

Mills hopes to have the legislation ready for council members to consider in a few weeks.

"Support the industry. It's a growing new industry. It works well. It's a great resource when you are at the arena or at Huntington Park. It's a great option. It helps with congestion and traffic," Mills said.
