Columbus Police Kill Gunman After Chase

Columbus police opened fire on an gunman after he refused to drop his weapon early Sunday morning.

Police were called to the 700 block of Whitethorne Avenue on a report of a man threatening people in the area with a gun.  While officers were en route to the scene, the gunman fled in a dark-colored SUV.

Cops then launched a helicopter and found the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Marese Collins.  Officers on the ground caught up to Collins, who then got out of his SUV and fled on foot.

Several minutes later, officers cornered Collins in the backyard of a home on Whitethorne Avenue and told him multiple times to drop his gun.  According to police, he refused and they opened fire, killing Collins.

No officers were hurt during the incident.

Officers later recovered a gun on Collins' body.
