While the future of red light cameras is being debated on the state level, Columbus city officials have voted to keep them around through May 2017.

Council members voted unanimously Monday night to keep the cameras in place.

The vote comes after the Ohio House approved a bill to ban the cameras. That measure is now with the Ohio Senate.

Supporters of the bill claim the cameras are only being used to generate revenue for the cities.  Officials who back the cameras say they make dangerous intersections safer.

Twelve states currently ban cameras that ticket speeders.
