New Albany K9 Struck, Killed By Vehicle

A police dog was struck and killed by a vehicle on Wednesday night when a cruiser door accidentally opened and the dog ran into traffic.

The dog, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois named Bungee, was struck along U.S. Route 62, near Yantis Road, 10TV's Tanisha Mallett reported.

New Albany city officials said they were not sure why the cruiser door opened. They were investigating to see if some type of malfunction occurred.

"Police dogs are trained to immediately leave the vehicle and get to work once the vehicle door opens," said New Albany police Sgt. Greg Jones. "Unfortunately in this instance, we don't know why the door opened, but as soon as it opened Bungee leapt into oncoming traffic and was killed."

The city said it was very satisfied with Bungee's work and impact on the community.

"Not only the drug work and the patrol work, which is tracking and apprehension, but he was great with the community and around the department," Jones said."There was a cruiser going by with its lights on so the dog was alerted that maybe something going on because of its training."

Police said it was too early to determine if they would get another K9 unit.

"Bungee was also made possible through a grant, and this is a pretty emotional time for our only trained K9 officer, so whether we move forward with another K-9 will need to be determined in the future," Jones said.

Friday would have been Bungee's fourth birthday.
