National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week honors dispatchers, public safety workers

They are often called the first first responders, and this week recognizes the work they do — it's National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

They are the voice when you are faced with an emergency and help guide you through the toughest times.

“We don't do it for the recognition. We do it because we care and we do it because we want to help,” said dispatcher Nicole Buck.

It's more than just answering the phone.

“It is stressful. It definitely takes a special person to be able to sit here and take traumatic calls back to back to back,” Buck said.

Those calls sometimes even they can't let go.

“There are quite a few. I think every one of us in this room has a call that sticks with you, that you go home and hug your kids a little bit tighter, you appreciate the time you have with your family a little more,” she said.
