Mount Carmel settles another wrongful death lawsuit connected to Dr. Husel investigation

COLUMBUS (WBNS) – Family of a 2017 patient in the care of Dr. William Husel has settled the lawsuit against Mount Carmel.

The family of Thelma Kyer filed the wrongful death lawsuit against Husel, Mount Carmel Health Systems, Trinity Health Corporation and two hospital employees.

According to Franklin County court records, Kyer died 14 minutes after Dr. Husel directed a dose of 400 micrograms of Fentanyl. The lawsuit indicates the dosage was deemed fatal causing Kyer to become unconscious for the brief reminder of her life.

Court records show that the family of Kyer has settled a lawsuit for $700,000. The family’s attorney received $139,000 and Kyer’s three daughters would each receive the remainder of the money, according to probate records reviewed by 10 Investigates.

Mount Carmel Health System, which has been embroiled in a scandal involving patients who were given excessive amounts of pain medications, has eight wrongful death settlements, 10 Investigates has learned.
