In what it calls a "record-breaking adoption event," a Texas animal shelter says more than 400 animals left the shelter in a mere three days.

It started when the Harris County Animal Shelter put out a call for help after it took in more than 200 animals in just 48 hours, KHOU reported. In response, the Houston shelter reduced adoption fees to just $10 from Wednesday through Friday.

The shelter was hoping to ease some of the overcrowding — and the community delivered.

"It was a record breaking adoption event for Harris County Animal Shelter—in just 72hrs 456 animals left the shelter through adoption, foster or rescue! Because of you, these animals got their second chance," the shelter wrote on Facebook.

The shelter said it is grateful to the community and rescue partners for helping save so many lives.
