Missing Columbus man found dead in Europe four months later

The family of 24-year-old Stephen Berichon says he went on a European vacation to learn more about his heritage.

Then he disappeared without a trace.

Four months after Berichon landed in Munich his whereabouts were a mystery, until a hiker came upon his body in Austria in April. Berichon landed in Munich on Dec. 9, 2017, and checked into a hotel in the town of Fussen on Dec. 11. That was the last time his family heard from him.

According to family, Berichon told the owner of the hotel that he was going to hike 70 miles to the nearest town in the Hopfen area. That was on the 16th. He was supposed to go Grainau then on to Mittenwald before heading back to Munich. That is about 300 miles --- the distance from Columbus to Chicago.

The family says a hiker found his body near a creek on April 29th near the city of Reuttee, Austria.

The cause of death was hypothermia, according to the family.

The family says he was adopted and used his trip to learn more about his family tree.

Berichon was a corporal in the Marine Corps. He worked for L Brands. A funeral was held for him on June 23.
