Man shot and killed by Mansfield police

MANSFIELD, Ohio – A man is dead after being shot by Mansfield police on Monday.

Police said officers were called to an apartment in the 600 block of West Straub Road around 4:25 p.m.

Someone called police saying it was believed a man was intoxicated or under the influence of drugs while holding a box cutter.

Officers said when they confronted the man, he was highly agitated and the man had already cut himself.

Police said officers tased the man but the tasers did not have any effect.

Officers then fired their weapons and the man was shot and killed, according to police.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was requested to conduct the shooting investigation.

Officers were not hurt.

The Mansfield Division of Police identified the officers involved as Officer Matt Davis, Officer Thayne Telquist, and Officer Scott Kotterman.

They were placed on administrative leave per the policy of the Mansfield Division of Police.

The identity of the man who was killed was not released.
