Man killed in Union County crash

UNION COUNTY, Ohio - A man was killed in a crash in Union County that happened late Sunday night, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

OSHP said 76-year-old Gerald Leavitt, of Fulton, Ohio in Morrow County, was stopped his car in the right lane of US-33 east near milepost 19 between Beecher Gamble Road and US-42.

Troopers said a man driving a semi was traveling southeast on US-33 and hit the back of Leavitt's car around 11:45 p.m.

Both vehicles then went off the right side of the road, hitting a culvert.

Leavitt was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi had minor injuries, OSHP said.

Investigators said alcohol is not considered to be a factor in this crash and Leavitt was not wearing a seatbelt.

OSHP is investigating the crash.

US-33 eastbound was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
