Man found naked in Newark apartment complex charged with rape

Police say they found a man wandering around a Newark apartment complex with no clothes on.

It was only later they say, that they would connect him to a violent attack on a young woman.

The first 911 call came at 4:12 a.m. Tuesday from an apartment on Westmoor Avenue in Newark.

"I live in McMillen Woods and there was a naked kid, looked like he was about 18 years old, knocking on my patio door just now,” the caller said.

A neighbor who didn’t want to be identified told 10TV her boyfriend was walking their dog just after 4 a.m. when he saw a man with no clothes on in the courtyard.

He told her the man asked, “Did you call 911?” Almost immediately, he said police arrived on scene and took the naked man into custody.

At that point, police say Christopher Carson's only crime was indecent exposure.

But eleven minutes later, Newark Police received another 911 call, from a home about a half-mile down Westmoor Avenue.

The caller said a 25-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted.

10TV spoke off-camera with the mother of the accuser. She says her daughter had given Carson a ride home from a bar.

Police say while in her car, he punched her in the head and raped her.

They say she was able to get out of the car and ran for help.

Police say that's when they connected the naked man they'd arrested, to the sexual assault.

Police charged Christopher Carson with rape Tuesday afternoon. Carson will make his first court appearance Wednesday.
