Man, 78, Fights Off Robber With Cane

A man said Friday that he took matters into his own hands when he awoke to a robber trying to steal his new television.

Lowell Handley first thought his wife was moving around their bedroom Thursday night when he realized it was a complete stranger, 10TV’s Jessa Goddard reported.

“As I got up I got a glimpse of him squatting down behind the television, unwiring my television,” Handley said.

Handley, 78, is disabled from a stroke and uses a cane to walk. That night, he used the cane for something else.

“I said, ‘what are you doing?’ and he said, ‘I’m stealing your television,’” Handley said. “I said, ‘like hell you are.’”

Handley then struck the robber in the head and shoulders with his cane, Goddard reported.

“I let go and he fell back into the dresser in there and he had my cane,” Handley said. “He grabbed my television and ran out the door.”

A neighbor noticed something wrong at Handley’s home and called police before recording the thief’s license plate number.

Police arrested two suspects and recovered Handley’s television within 30 minutes of the crime. They were charged with aggravated robbery, Goddard reported.

Handley said that he would do it again, and wants future would-be thieves to consider his reaction a warning.
