Officials of Madison-Plains Schools has decided to take extra time off around Thanksgiving in order to try and control a whooping cough outbreak.

School will be closed on Monday and Tuesday of next week, preceding the Thanksgiving Holiday. Extra-curricular activities are being called off starting today (Friday).

Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a bacterial infection. The Ohio Department of Health says the highly contagious disease is one of the most commonly occurring vaccine-preventable ones in the United States. The disease is usually spread by coughing or sneezing.

School officials are asking parents to report any confirmed cases to the school, even during the break. Parents can also leave a message with the Madison County Health Department at 740-852-3065 Ext. 1514.
