A rehab project near the Short North is preserving a historic building and providing affordable housing.

It's a multi-million dollar project by Homeport in collaboration with several other agencies.

The idea is to update the historic property and allow people to stay in a neighborhood where home prices are sky rocketing.

“If you want something that’s energized, you want something that’s in the mix of the pulse of the city, this is a good place, and people have the wisdom to see that you need to have housing in areas that people can afford,” said resident Doris Clowney.

The building houses 34 units. Homeport is also renovating two other nearby buildings into 25 townhomes for families.
