Local Pearl Harbor survivor Milton Mapou has died at 97

Milton Mapou, a local survivor of the attacks on Pearl Harbor during World War II, passed away Thursday at 97.

Warren Motts, of Motts Military Museum in Groveport, confirmed the news to 10TV.

Mapou was aboard the U.S.S. Detroit in Pearl Harbor during the attack on December 7, 1941. He earned two Purple Hearts and 10 Battle Stars.

Until his trip back to Hawaii for the attack's 75th anniversary in 2016, he hadn’t been back to Pearl Harbor since 1945 when he was moved to California to recover from a World War II injury.
