Broken sirens have caused some concern in central Ohio after 11 in Licking County did not activate during recent tests.

Municipalities, not the county, are responsible for maintaining the sirens and Licking County EMA sent letters to the seven affected.

All but one have repaired or are repairing the problems. Three sirens are inoperable — in Granville, Johnstown and Licking Township — and either being relocated or replaced.

“Virtually, all the jurisdictions right now have arranged for repair or have them looked at. Some cases, some of them are up and running, some cases, parts are ordered,” said EMA Director Sean Grady.

Grady wants people to know the sirens are only designed to alert people outside. He recommends people sign up for the county’s alert system. To do that, click here.
