A unique request made by the daughter of fallen Westerville Police officer Eric Joering has gained the attention of K-9 patrol units around the country.

Corporal Justin Alloway, with the Westerville Police Department, says 11-year-old Elena made the request for t-shirts from various K-9 units as a way to remember her father.

“I thought, let me put something on Facebook, let me see what we can come up with,” Alloway said.

“Quite honestly I was very naïve.”

Alloway posted the request in the “Westerville Strong” Facebook group. He says the post was shared more than 1,200 times.

Less than a week after making the post, boxes began arriving at the Westerville Police Department with shirts, hats and stuffed animals from every region in the country. In all, Elena has already received more than 30 t-shirts from various agencies.

“It shows me blue is blue no matter where you’re from,” Alloway said.

“They come and help and do whatever they can to make this family feel more secure at a time when they need it the most.”
