A Newcomerstown officer involved in a shooting last week admitted he made the story up and shot himself, according to the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office.

Officer Bryan J. Eubanks reported he attempted to stop a black Geo Tracker on April 11 for not having a license plate.

Eubanks told authorities a white male passenger opened fire on the officer shooting at him twice as he approached the vehicle, striking him once in the arm, before fleeing.

According to the sheriff's office, evidence contradicted his original claim.

Witnesses told investigators they did see a police cruiser in the area but no other vehicles were seen.

During further questioning, Eubanks made up the story after a failed suicide attempt.

The sheriff's office said a full report will be given to the Tuscarawas County Prosecutor's Office for the filing of charges against Eubanks.
