WAYNE COUNTY, Ohio - Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers in northeast Ohio arrested an inmate who escaped while being transported from New York to Indiana.

The Ashland Post of the Ohio State Patrol found Ali El-Khatib walking near Interstate 71 and US-250 when they arrested him. No one was injured in that arrest.

El-Khatib, in custody for larceny, was being driven from the New York Police Department to the Allen County Sheriff's Office in Indiana, according to OSHP.

He has also been wanted by the Ashland Police Department since 2014 for the same offense.

He was being driven by the transportation company Affordable Extradition Service.

El-Khatib escaped after asking to use the restroom at a rest area on I-71 in Wayne County near mile marker 197 around 9 p.m. on Friday.

Police said people in the area should lock their homes, buildings, and cars.

OSHP said if anyone sees El-Khatib, they should not approach him and should call 911 or the Ohio State Highway Patrol Wayne County post at 330-264-0575.
