Helping kids in need prepare for school

Thousands of families across Franklin County have been making a special trip to local libraries. Inside, the Charity Newsies are accepting applications for any student to receive new clothes, coats, socks, uniforms and other school supplies completely free. It is meant to help any family struggling for any reason.

"This is our opening for giving clothes out to the children of Franklin County," said Mike Burrell, Chairperson for Charity Newsies.

Burrell explained more than 13,000 children were assisted in finding brand new clothing for school free of charge through the organization. The Charity Newsies have been operating for decades. Burrell said the clothing and uniform assistance not only leaves many children proud of what they're wearing, but impacts attendance at local schools.

"It makes all the difference in the world. We have many families that would elect to stay home if they didn't have clean clothes to wear to school," said Columbus City Schools Superintendent Dan Good. "We want people to remember this when they see those people remember this when they see those people on the corner in December so that they give to the Charity Newsies and remember the good work that it does for our community."

The Charity Newsies have three annual money-making efforts. In December the volunteers from every corner of Central Ohio sell newspapers and take donations on designated heavy-traffic intersections. They also help to run various 5Ks and road races around town, with proceeds going into the clothing drive fund. Charity Newsies also take part in a fundraising ball.

While many of the families the clothing drive supports live below the poverty line, not all. The organization also helps families that have survived some sort of major event.

"We have people all over Franklin County. As far away as Muirfield, where people think they don't need help. Everyone goes through a situation and we're here for them also," said Burrell.
