A guidance counselor at Heath High School has been charged with sexual battery after she admitted to having sex with a student.

Mackenzie Matthews, 34, was charged with the third-degree felony. She has been on paid leave from the school during the investigation.

Matthews engaged in sexual conduct with an 18-year-old male student between Feb. 1, 2010, and March 31, 2010, according to the Newark Advocate.

Police say she has admitted the relationship to them.

Even though it was consensual and happened off school grounds, it is illegal in Ohio for an educator to have a sexual relationship with a student.

The newspaper reports that another teacher is currently filling the guidance counselor role at the school.

Matthews has been at the school since 2005.

Police tell 10TV that they believe this is an isolated incident.
