Giraffe at Cincinnati Zoo dies following complications from procedure

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden said their beloved male giraffe, Kimba, has died Sunday following complications from a procedure.

The zoo says the Zoo Volunteer Observer team had been monitoring the giraffe barn to watch for signs of labor in another giraffe, CeCe, when they saw 12-year-old Kimba fall to the ground at around 1 a.m.

"He had a successful procedure last week to fix his hooves, but there were complications following the procedure," the zoo said on Facebook. "Please keep Kimba's care team in your thoughts. They are devastated."
