Franklin County deputy escapes harm in "ambush attack"

Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin says he's upset someone opened fire on one of his deputies in what the sheriff describes as an "ambush-like attack."

The ordeal unfolded just after 7 a.m. Sunday morning at an apartment complex on Leesburg Court in west Franklin County.

Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said the suspect was busted trying to break into a truck in a parking lot.

"The owner of the truck came out and confronted him, at which point it appears the suspect pulled a gun and shot at the owner of the truck," said Sheriff Baldwin.

Neighbor, Donna Thomas, heard the gunshots, called 911, and took cover with her grandchildren.

"I told them to come here and I told them climb under the bed," said Thomas.

Investigators say 31-year-old Scott Kimberling threatened another neighbor with a gun before he turned his weapon on deputies racing to the rescue.

CrimeTracker 10 observed the cruiser that sustained damage from several bullets. One glanced off the iron bars and sailed across the backseat, likely directly behind the deputy's head.

Sheriff Baldwin said the deputy who was targeted was already out of his cruiser before he realized he was under attack.

10TV obtained a photo of the suspect's weapon.

Sheriff's investigators say it appears Kimberling tried to fit the gun with an illegal suppressor in an attempt to muffle the sound of the gunshots.

An annual report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms shows the number of suppressors in Ohio has skyrocketed in recent years. In 2014, there were more than 26,000 legal, registered suppressors in the Buckeye State. That number remained steady until this year when it catapulted to more than 52-thousand suppressors. It's a 97 percent increase.

Sheriff Baldwin says lab tests will confirm whether Kimberling had an illegal suppressor on his weapon. If so, Baldwin said Kimberling could face federal gun charges.

He's currently behind bars facing three counts of felonious assault and aggravated robbery.
