Firefighters Struggle To Gain Control Of Grove City Tire Fire

A large pile of tires burned at a Grove City shredding facility early Sunday morning.

A passerby first reported the smoke and flames around 7:30 a.m. in the area of Jackson Pike and Dyer Road.

Thick, black smoke could be seen spreading across the Columbus skyline from Liberty Tire Recycling.

The first fire crew to arrive at the scene immediately called for backup.

Firefighters were initially concerned about people breathing in the smoke, but the fire broke out in an industrial area so there wasn't a concern for any residents immediately nearby.

Investigators didn't say how the fire started, but it was mostly contained by 9:00 a.m.
