Fayette County deputy shoots and kills 72-year-old suspect in sexual assault of juvenile

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ohio - Officials have released the name of the man pronounced dead after a deputy-involved shooting in Fayette County Wednesday afternoon, according to the sheriff's office.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office said 72-year-old Randall J. McKenzie of Orient was a suspect in a sexual assault of a juvenile. A tip from a person familiar with the case said McKenzie was parked near a common drop off site for elementary school students.

Deputies did not find him there, but found him parked along Rockwell Road in northern Fayette County around 4:00 p.m. Wednesday.

When the detective arrived, McKenzie reportedly took out a gun. The detective says McKenzie was told several times to drop the weapon and when he didn't he was shot and killed, according to the sheriff's office.

The Ohio Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.

The name of the detective involved has not been released.
