Elementary school uses mindfulness and music to help students focus

Taking a moment to calm and focus. It’s what some area elementary students are now doing every morning. It may seem like a small act but it's part of a bigger picture in learning how to cope.

Barrington Elementary School in Upper Arlington has started a program called "Mindful Music Moments."

Every morning, students listen to a few minutes of music from The Columbus Symphony. They’re directed to think about something while the music plays. It’s all about calming their minds and focusing.

“The biggest thing that mindful music does is help to mitigate the anxiety,” said music teacher Debbie Gibson. “Learning to focus is another developmental strategy and it must be intentionally taught.”

The school counselor said it’s a tool the kids can go back to when they need to calm their minds, a way to self-regulate.
