Nationwide Children’s Hospital is increasing its presence in the fight against opioid abuse.

The hospital earned a designation from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) as an authorized collector of unwanted medication.

The safe and secure drop disposal boxes are conveniently located at each of the outpatient pharmacies at Nationwide Children’s.

NCH Ambulatory Pharmacy Supervisor Alex Swick said the convenience is intentional.

“A lot of patients and their parents don’t want to take them to the police stations and that kind of thing, so being able to do this in a setting they're familiar with is important," he said.

The DEA was instrumental in legislation from 2014 that was aimed at improving access to safe and convenient drug disposal locations. Nationwide Children’s is included in the three percent of eligible sites that have implemented the service.
