Deadline looming for 2017 tax returns

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The deadline to file 2017 tax returns is now a week away. The deadline usually falls on April 15 each year.

However, the deadline this year is April 17 because the 15th is on a Sunday, and Washington, D.C. celebrates Emancipation Day on April 16.

Americans filing tax returns in spring 2018 will not feel the effects of a new tax law that was passed in December. Changes are set to go into effect for next year's filings.

For freelancers or self-employed taxpayers, April 17 is also the deadline for making first quarter 2018 estimated tax payments. Tuesday will also be the last day for contributions to any Roth IRA or traditional IRA, according to TurboTax.
