COLUMBUS - The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) is offering free fares for Wednesday due to the county's snow emergency level.

Franklin County is currently under a level 2 snow emergency.

COTA provides free fares for all bus routes when the Franklin County Sheriff declares a level 2 or level 3 snow emergency.

COTA representatives say that free fares may help the public to remain safer during icy and snowy conditions. It also reduce congestion on the road so that crews can clear and salt the roadways.

A level 2 snow emergency means that roadways are hazardous and that there is blowing and drifting snow, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's office.
