COLUMBUS, Ohio – Members of Columbus City Council passed a ceremonial resolution on Monday, condemning a state bill banning some abortions.

The bill bans abortions after a detectable heartbeat and does not have any exceptions for victims of rape or incest.

Governor Mike DeWine signed the bill into law last week.

In a statement, City Council said the resolution details how the bill will “negatively impact the City of Columbus’s ability to attract qualified medical professionals and businesses to the city, and works directly against local efforts like CelebrateOne and Restoring Our Own Through Transformation (ROOTT) to reduce infant mortality and promote the health of its citizens.”

When he signed the bill, DeWine said it is the government’s job to protect the vulnerable.
