SHELBY COUNTY -- A car crash has left a 23-year-old woman dead, and two babies and a man critically injured, according to WHIO.

Police said the accident happened Friday night just before 9 p.m. in the 22000 block of State Route 47 West near Tawawa-Maplewood Road in Shelby County.

Investigators said a buggy carrying four members of a local Amish family was traveling westbound when they were struck from behind by an SUV. The family in the buggy was ejected.

Lieutenant Tim Bender of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man and two babies were taken to local hospitals in critical condition.

The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and tried to leave the scene, according to Bender.

“He was apprehended by Logan County Sheriff’s deputies about a mile from the scene,” Lt. Bender said. “It is possible the driver of the vehicle was alcohol involved.”

The horse pulling the buggy had minor visible injuries and was taken to a nearby farm.

The SUV driver will be cited for assured clear distance and will likely face charges.

The names of the victims and the driver have not been released.
