Better Business Bureau Warns Of 'Crooked' Contractor

The Better Business Bureau is doing something it rarely does by reissuing an alert about a contractor.

AC's Home Restoration was the focus of a warning in September, and officials say the person associated with it is at it again.

Patricia Bevan said he seemed like the real deal. The flyers for AC's Home Restoration services advertised contractor specials.

So, she paid him $70 cash to clean her gutters, replace the nails and clean up the mess.

"Came out, and no new nails. Gutter's half cleaned.  He took off and went back to wherever he came from," said Bevan.

She filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and learned that AC's Home Restoration Services, and its owner Adolfo Castaneda, has had a longstanding F rating.

"This company, and this individual, came to our attention about a year ago," said Joan Coghlin of the Better Business Bureau.

Coughlin says last September, an elderly Columbus woman filed a police report that she paid Castaneda $18,000 for roof repairs he didn't complete. There are other victims, too.

"He preys on the vulnerable in our community for the most part.  Senior citizens who are trustworthy, that open their doors to individuals and he's got a story for you. I think on occasion he's even brought his children so he's very persuasive," said Coughlin.

In fact, he brought his children to Sara Byk's house when he offered to repair her storm-damaged roof.

She says he told her he was homeless. So, she let the family move in while he did the repairs.

"He helped me fill out the paperwork for the insurance claim.  He did the work for what the insurance paid me," said Byk.

But Byk has no idea where he is now.

Patricia Bevan says $70 is $70.

"I'd like to see restitution, but I don't think that's going to happen.  He doesn't have any money. He just scams people.  He needs to serve some time," she said.

Consumer 10 was unable to locate Castaneda for comment. His voicemail box is full.

The BBB says beware of contractors who demand cash, are vague about licenses, offer low prices, and pressures you for an immediate decision.
