APPLE CREEK, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a man threatening to shoot himself refused to drop his handgun while approaching a sheriff's deputy in Ohio and was fatally shot by the deputy.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called around 11 a.m. Sunday to downtown Apple Creek where the man threatened to shoot himself. Authorities say they repeatedly told him to drop his weapon, and he said they would have to "shoot him."

The sheriff's release says the man kept walking toward a deputy who told him to stop and drop the gun. The release says the man was less than 40 feet from the deputy before the deputy fired one rifle round, striking the man.

The man died at a hospital. His identity wasn't released.

The investigation is continuing.
