One person is dead after a woman opened fire during a reported home invasion in east Columbus.

Police tell 10TV a female homeowner called 911 to say someone was attempting to break into her home on the 600 block of South Hampton Road just after 10 a.m.  She then grabbed a weapon and shot the intruder.  A young toddler was in the home at the time of the incident, but was not hurt.

The suspect - 23-year-old William Evans was pronounced dead at the scene.  The armed homeowner told police she did not know Evans.

Family members of Evans say he has never been arrested and nor been to jail. Evan's mother tells 10TV her son came to the house and South Hampton Road because the man who lives there was speaking negatively about the mother of his child.

Family members add that Evans came to the house to defend the woman's honor when he was shot to death.  "My son was a good boy," Evans' mother said tearfully.
