The new Arena Football League team in Columbus has a familiar name: the Destroyers.

The league along with team officials made the announcement Friday morning at Nationwide Arena.

“Columbus was a very successful AFL organization in the past, with its incredibly strong market,” said Randall Boe, Commissioner of the AFL. Judging by the enthusiasm we’ve seen since over the last several weeks, their future is looking incredibly bright. The fans are excited to have an AFL team back in Columbus – it’s going to be a great season for Arena Football.”

Also, former AFL player and coach Matthew Sauk was announced as the Destroyers’ head coach.

Sauk was the offensive coordinator for the AFL’s Utah Blaze from 2011 to 2013 and head coach of the Portland Thunder in 2014.

It was announced two weeks ago that Columbus would be the sixth city to earn an AFL team for the league's reorganization in 2019.

The season is scheduled to begin at the end of April with each of the league's six teams playing 12 regular season games.

The Destroyers will play on the road for the first three weeks of the season before their home opener at Nationwide Arena on May 18.
