A male alligator at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium died on Saturday, Zoo officials say.

Zoo officials say the alligator had been under veterinary care for a few weeks because of a respiratory condition.

A crowd watched Saturday as the Zoo's animal care team tried to perform CPR on the animal.

The animal's health began to decline rapidly on Saturday, and he died around 7:45 p.m, according to the Zoo.
