DUBLIN - September is Safe Driving Awareness Month and 10TV Sports Anchor Dom Tiberi wants to make sure no one goes through what his family went through nearly 5 years ago.

"You never get over it. The wound never heals," he said. "We kind of live in limbo."

On September 17, 2013, Dom's daughter Maria was killed in an auto accident. While police said Maria's phone was locked in her purse, it is believed that something distracted her and caused her to crash while she was driving.

On Thursday, Dom sat down with Dublin Police Officer Chuck Collier to discuss both the city and the Tiberi family's mission to end distracted driving.

"We have an epidemic," Dom said. "Not only in Ohio, not only in Dublin but in the United States. And it's awful and it's preventable. (Car crashes) are the leading killer of our children."

Dom and his wife Terri founded the Maria Tiberi Foundation, a non-profit that promotes safe driving. Throughout the year, Dom speaks to Central Ohio schools as part of Maria's Message, sponsored by 10TV.

On September 16, 10TV and the Maria Tiberi Foundation are hosting Maria's Ride. A procession of 300 cars will start at Dublin Coffman High School and end at the Schottenstein Center on The Ohio State University campus.

Drivers are asked to make a donation to the Maria Tiberi Foundation. Every dollar raised will be used to create the nation's first free simulator schools to teach young people the dangers of distracted driving.

Registration is at 8 a.m. and the ride will kick off at 9 a.m. To learn more and to register, click here.
