1 killed in south Columbus shooting


Police confirm one person is dead following a shooting in south Columbus.

At approximately 2 p.m. Wednesday, officers and medics were called to a residence in the 1500 block of Tracy Circle on a report of a shooting.

The victim was transported to Mount Carmel West in critical condition and later died from the injuries.

Police identified the victim as a man named Rayshawn Thomas, however family members tell 10TV the victim identified as a woman and went by Rae'lynn.

Police believe she and the shooting suspect, James Byrd, got into a fight inside the residence. Police say the altercation escalated to the point Byrd shot Thomas with a small caliber firearm.

According to police, Byrd remained at the scene and was taken into custody.

Byrd will remain in jail on $2 million bond. He will go before a judge again next week.
