Newspaper Photo Rubbed Some The Wrong Way

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Editors of the student newspaper at The Ohio State University said they would consider posting a note to readers after a photograph in the paper rubbed some people the wrong way.

The photo, which ran on the Sports page of The Lantern the day after the Buckeyes were defeated in the national championship game, showed two firefighters battling billowing smoke.

Above the firemen were the words, "It could be worse," 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported.

Based on comments left by readers on the The Lantern's Web site, several people thought the photograph was taken during the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"I think this is in very poor taste," one person wrote. Another student wrote that "the people who put this cover together are fanatics, not fans," Kocot reported.

However, The Lantern's editor-in-chief, Gerrick Lewis, said readers took the photograph the wrong way. He said the photograph is not of the Sept. 11 attacks, but rather a fire in South Korea that claimed no lives.

Lewis said he found the photo in a database of Associated Press images. He also said his newspaper would not think of comparing the Sept. 11 attacks to losing a football game.

"I think the thing I'm having the hardest time with is that people think a student newspaper would go there, and we wouldn't," Lewis said.  "I want people to think that we're more responsible than that."
