Woman Accused Of Stealing Ex-Boyfriend's Ashes

ATHENS, Ohio - A woman faces felony vandalism charges after she allegedly dug up her ex-boyfriend's grave and stole an urn containing his ashes.

Prosecutors said Martha LaFollette snuck into New Marshfield Cemetery and stole Roger Barber's remains from a family plot sometime in June, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported.

LaFollete, who was not invited to Barber's funeral, is scheduled to appear in court next week, Kocot reported.

Barber's teenage daughter said she was mortified after finding out someone dug up her father's grave.

"Your dad just died I didn't want to believe it," Sierra Barber said. "I have never heard of this happening and that's why this is so shocking.  Nobody's ever heard of it."

Athens County Prosecutor David Warren said it is the first case of body snatching he has had to investigate, Kocot reported.

"I have crimes that I like to refer to as aggravated stupid," Warren said. "I have been doing this for almost 30 years now and I have never had anyone steal someone's ashes."

Sierra Barber said she has never been able to pay her respects at her father's gravesite.

"I have to do this all over again," she said. "I have to bury my dad and go through it, all over again."

Barber said she will not be able to begin those proceedings until after the case is heard in court.

"My dad's in an evidence locker," she said. "They say rest in peace for a reason when you bury someone."

LaFollete declined 10TV's requests for an interview.
