Landers: Skybus Delivers, But Not Without Some Glitches

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Skybus Airlines took off with a planeload of paying passengers for the first time on Tuesday.

The discount airline already sold 200,000 tickets, 10TV's Kevin Landers reported.

"Tickets were inexpensive," said Summer Saunders, who flew on the maiden trip to Burbank.  "Their Web site was easy to navigate."

The first flight departed for Burbank, Calif., at 9:46 a.m.

The first-ever passengers received a standing ovation as they walked to the plane, Landers reported.

Once inside the plane, the first thing passengers notice is that all the seats are leather.  Some said the food is better than most airlines.

Charlie Clifton brought the Skybus concept to Columbus.  He started Ryanair, which is now the world's most profitable airline.

The flight landed at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank and customer gave the airline rave reviews.

"There was a lot more legroom than normal flights," said Jennifer Cosio, a passenger on the flight.

The flight was not without problems, Landers reported.  The airline ran out of most of its breakfast food halfway into the flight.  It happened again on the return flight to Columbus when the lunch menu came up short.

The carrier attracted $160 million in startup money from investors, including central Ohio companies Huntington Capital Investment Co., Nationwide Mutual Capital and Wolfe Enterprises, a subsidiary of The Dispatch Printing Company which owns 10TV.
