Reducing Accidents During the Holidays

The number of highway crashes always spikes around the holidays. A new study ranks the top 25 at-risk roadways for drunk drivers in our state, and six are in central Ohio.

The Ohio Highway Patrol is teaming up with five other states to keep roads safer this holiday. It's a plan they're calling Life Stat 1.0.

The goal is to reduce the amount of fatal crashes to just one every 100 miles with extra enforcement and education. So far, troopers say it's working.

The number of deadly accidents in Franklin County is down 34% from last year.

OHP Sgt. Steve Mahl says, compared to last year, Ohio roadways have seen 100 fewer deadly crashes.

"They're more heartfelt this time of year. No one wants to knock on a door, but the time you do, you tarnish that holiday forever for those people," Sgt. Mahl said.

If you're traveling on the roads this holiday, the OHP recommends that you plan ahead, take extra time and allow safe stopping distance. Also, remember to have a designated driver if you plan on drinking.
