Public Warned About Phone Scam

Reported by Eric James

People are being warned of a potential scam by callers looking for your personal information.

The Marion County sheriff issued a warning Wednesday after receiving four reports and numerous complaints from residents in Marion County of someone calling them, trying to steal their identities.

Sheriff Tim Bailey says the callers say they are from the Department of Verification or the National Verification Center. They ask for checking account numbers or social security numbers, to verify a person's identity.

The sheriff says if you get one of these calls, you shouldn't give out any information, even if the person claims to be with a government agency.

Sheriff Bailey says, "These people are trying to intimidate the senior citizen. They talk fast and they say they are with the National Verification Center and need to secure their account."

The caller was told that if she gave out her information, she would get a $500 discount on her medication.

The sheriff says neither the Department of Verification nor the National Verification Center exists. If you get one of these phone calls, call the sheriff's department.
