COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Secretary of State's office notified the state's Republican Party on Tuesday that it believes the party misdirected funds during the last election cycle, 10 Investigates Paul Aker reported.

According to the Secretary of State, a fund used to support Republican candidates for state office in 2006 received nearly $500,000 it should not have.

The secretary's office said those funds were meant only for candidates running for federal office, Aker reported.

According to a letter from the Secretary of State, $495,000 must be reimbursed immediately.

A spokesman for the Republican Party disagreed with the secretary's findings, saying, "We're seeking a legal opinionwe feel federal funds can be spent on a statewide race."

Despite an earlier statement to the contrary, that spokesman for the Republican Party said only one statewide candidate received the money in question, Aker reported.

The spokesman said it was the candidate for Gov. Ken Blackwell, Aker reported.
