OWENSVILLE, Ohio — The U.S. military said a Cincinnati area soldier was killed over the weekend while serving in Afghanistan.

The remains of Army Spc. Joseph A. Bauer, 27, arrived Monday at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

Family members said Defense Department officials informed them that Bauer died Saturday when an explosive hit his vehicle while he was working duty as a mine sweeper.

Bauer was a native of Owensville in Clermont County.

His family said he joined the Army in 2007 and recently re-enlisted with plans of becoming a career soldier.
