Cleveland School Board Approves Overhaul

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Municipal School District board approved an overhaul on Tuesday that would close or move 16 schools.

The board passed the plan in an 8-1 vote at a school board meeting Tuesday night.

Cleveland Schools CEO Eugene Sanders said the goal is to raise low test scores and improve their 54 percent graduation rate.

The plan has been controversial since it was introduced two months ago.

The school board meeting on Tuesday was standing room only as parents, teachers and students packed the room.

Under the transformation plan, some teachers and staff members will have to reapply for their current jobs.

"To ask me to reapply is an insult to me and every teacher that works there," said school psychologist Gina Rose.

Some schools will see redesigned academic programs. In June, the district will close 14 elementary schools and two high schools - 10 percent of its facilities.

East High students made a passionate plea to board members to save their school.

"If you can refocus other schools why not East High? We deserve a second chance," said one student.

The Cleveland Teachers Union has suggested further discussion so teachers, parents and the community have more say in the plan.
