"He was diagnosed August 10th and our life was forever changed that day," said his mother Cindy Bish.
Sam had noticed a strange pain in his legs and a trip to the doctor found an aggressive form of cancer called osteosarcoma. Chemotherapy treatments started a eight days later.
On Monday, Sam was discharged from Nationwide Children's Hospital after a six-day chemo stay.
"Of course we ask (why did this happen to their son). Now were looking to to see what the blessing is behind it. God's used him as a tool for a lot of people," said Mike.
People have been touched. They have shaved their hair for Sam. And then there's the people who help the Bish family with day-to-day living. Sam had his right leg amputated last month.
"The phantom pain, him feeling his toes and leg that's not there anymore has been very difficult," said Cindy.
Luckily the pain isn't constant, thanks to medicine and extra doses of love from friends and family.
Sam is now saying "thank you" and looking forward to the Holidays which will includ toys, movies and computer games. Most importantly, he will be with loved ones.
The battle of life will continue.
"(The cancer is) still in his lungs, still in his spine, still have a long road ahead of us, said Cindy.
The church Sam Bish and his family attend are holding a charity auction to help pay for his medical bills.
It'll be at the Westerville Christian Church in Westerville, Ohio on Saturday December 5, 2009.
