MCCONNELSVILLE, Ohio — A southeast Ohio teenager received life in prison for the rape and murder of a woman who treated him like her own son.

For about an hour during his Morgan County sentencing, the family of Abi Matthews told Travis Fischer about the torment he continues to put them all through.

"I just hope you never see the day of light Travis Fischer," exclaimed Diana Goins.

Friends and family of Abi Matthews stared Travis Fischer in the eyes, demanding to know how anyone could rape and kill a person who cared for him when no one else would.

"My sister fought for you to stay in school, get good grades and male something of yourself. But instead of making her proud, you killed her," said brother David Matthews, Jr.

Peggy Matthews described the horrible death her 35-year-old daughter suffered at her Malta home in June at the hands of a 17-year-old.

"I have the earrings that Abi was wearing when this happened to her. They're covered in blood, twisted and bent from the blows to her lovely head," said Peggy Matthews.

A motive other than robbery was never given. The now 18-year-old was known to dabble with drugs, alcohol, and juvenile detention.

"He's never had a chance in life," said Connie Fischer.

His dad is in prison. His mom has her own problems.

"We all stepped up there to help him," said Debbie Kennedy, Travis Fischer's Great Aunt.

The stone-faced young man will spend life in prison, with the chance for parole after 30 years. His 1-year-old son will grow up without his dad. However, it's Abi Matthews' three children who said they'll suffer the most.

"We don't have a mom to talk to when things get tough. We have to go to the cemetery," said daughter Shaneeka Matthews.

"If his fate were in my hands I would kill you. I would kill you for what you did to her," said Peggy Matthews.

Peggy Matthews said months before Abi's death, her dog Maggie was found savagely beaten and left for dead in her home, just like Abi.

"The only day I'll feel justice is the day I'll see your name in the obituaries," said Shaneeka Matthews.

Travis Fischer will now be required to register as a sex offender. The judge also ordered him to pay the cost of his local incarceration. Fischer has 30 days to appeal his sentencing.
