Monday,  November 16, 2009 2:53 PM

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio — Jury selection has begun in the trial of one of two Ohio police chiefs accused of snooping on the woman who carried twins for Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.

Barry Carpenter is on suspension as chief in Martins Ferry, the eastern Ohio town where the surrogate lived. Carpenter and Chief Chad Dojack from nearby Bridgeport are accused of conspiring to steal items from the woman's home and sell them to celebrity photographers.

Opening statements could follow jury selection that began Monday in Carpenter's trial on multiple felonies, including burglary and receiving stolen property.

Dojack's trial is set for January. Both men have pleaded not guilty.

Carpenter could face 21 1/2 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
